When Did The Claremont Insitute Become Alt-right?
Views from right-wing think tank are increasingly unhinged
I’ve always thought of the Claremont Institute as your average right-wing think tank. You know the type of place that talks about the values of capitalism and democracy and claims gun ownership is a God-given right. But over the last few years, it’s taken a turn to the extreme right. Unfortunately, like a large part of the Republican Party, the Claremont Insitute strikes a neofascist tone these days.
In April, I saw the first warning sign when Claremont-publication, The American Mind, ran a shocking article that essentially called for civil war.
Writer Glenn Ellmers claimed about half of the country wasn’t “real Americans.” He also said this is an untenable situation and the only solution was to destroy the other half.
“Most people living in the United States today — certainly more than half — are not Americans in any meaningful sense of the term,” said Ellmers. “They do not believe in, live by, or even like the principles, traditions, and ideals that until recently defined America as a nation and as a people. It is not obvious what we should call these citizen-aliens, these non-American Americans; but they are something else.”
