Two years after Jan. 6, Coup Ringleaders Still Walk Free

Republicans sympathize with violent insurrectionists

Two years ago, fanatical followers of former President Donald Trump, egged on by right-wing propaganda, launched a coup attempt against the U.S. government. On the second anniversary of Jan. 6, those shocking images are still seared into my mind. On that day we turned on our TVs and saw windows being smashed, cops being assaulted and frenzied MAGA cultists storming through the Capitol like rampaging Vikings.

We’re still dealing with the fallout of that terrorist attack because that’s what it was; a violent attack by neo-fascist extremists intent on overthrowing the democratically-elected Biden administration. About 1,000 people have been arrested and charged over Jan. 6. But one negative point is that few of the brains behind the coup are behind bars. Trump, who instigated the violence, still walks free and hasn’t even been charged by the Department of Justice.
