Trumpism Isn’t A Viable Future for GOP

Eleven years ago, I wrote a column predicting the fracturing of the Republican Party. In the wake of the frenzy of hatred directed at President Barack Obama, mainly because he dared to occupy a role that many people thought was reserved for white men, I predicted that the GOP would eventually split. The sane Republicans would eventually realize they can’t continue to be competitive in a country with a growing non-white population as long as they tolerate white nationalists. This would leave the white nationalists and the neo-Confederates to break off and form their own party focused around white grievance and nostalgia for a past that never existed.

Well, my prediction was slightly wrong. The Republicans ended up embracing the white nationalists and neo-Confederates. And that’s why the party is in chaos today and engaged in a civil war. However, the white nationalists and neo-Confederates, have been joined by the conspiracy theorists and truth deniers in the form of the insane conspiracy theory, QAnon.
