The rise and swift fall of the latest “Hillary spied on Trump” story is a case study of problems in the media, real fake news and truth distortion.

The story first appeared last week when Special Counsel John Durham filed charges against Michael Sussman, a cybersecurity lawyer, who had worked for the Hillary Clinton campaign.

But if you read through the court papers, Durham’s charges don’t mention spying. Sussman is charged with lying to the FBI. However, somehow the right-wing media molded that into a story claiming Hillary spied on Trump.

The only problem was none of it was true. But, much of the right-wing media doesn’t care about the truth when they’re pushing a story. All they care about is promoting a narrative. As long as it makes right-wingers mad, the story does its job.
