So England’s luck finally ran out. After stumbling to the final of Euro 2024, the Three Lions lost 2–1 to Spain in Sunday’s game. Nico Williams put Spain 1–0 up. England drew level with a stunning strike from Cole Palmer. But a late goal from Mikel Oyarzabal broke millions of English hearts.

This continues the almost 60-year drought for England in international tournaments. Being an England fan is a trying job. I’ve watched the England national team for about 40 years and have gotten used to many epic failures. This was one of the better ones. Being an England fan means you get used to losing — a lot. It’s a running joke among the English.

Outstanding Record

But coach Gareth Southgate has turned things around. He has the best record of an England coach since the legendary Sir Alf Ramsey who led the team to its only title in 1966 when they won the World Cup.

Southgate has an outstanding record. One World Cup semifinal, a World Cup quarter-final and two consecutive Euro finals. But he can’t get the team over the finishing line. Maybe it’s time for some new blood.
