‘Sinners’ Is A Genre-Hopping Masterpiece

Ryan Coogler’s movie dripping with black history, culture, blood

“Sinners”, director Ryan Coogler’s latest movie, is a piece of cinema that leaves you thinking long after you leave the theater. It’s a breathtaking movie filled with stunning images and packed with several themes. And in a way, it’s very difficult to review. I had to think long and hard before I wrote this one.

“Sinners” has been billed as a horror movie, but that’s not totally accurate. The vampires show up around halfway through the movie, and they are incidental to the main plot.

The main plot of the movie features a pair of former soldiers-turned-gangsters both played by Michael B. Jordan. They are named Smoke and Stack, and you can tell the differences in their personalities and their views on the world by their hats.

Smoke, the more level-headed and calculating twin, wears a blue hat, to indicate he’s the calmer one. Whilst Stack is the more cynical brother. He wears a red hat that indicates his fiery and dangerous nature.

After surviving World War I, the brothers become hired guns for the Chicago mob, abscond with their money and travel back to Mississippi, their home. The plan is to use the money to start up a juke joint, an establishment where you can…
