As I’ve often said, the curse of being a journalist in the Trump era is writing the same story over and over again. We see ourselves as modern-day Cassandras — doomed to keep screaming a warning and wondering if anyone’s listening.

Unfortunately, I’ve been writing about neo-Nazi Nick Fuentes for about five years. I identified him long before he went mainstream. And that’s the most disturbing thing: he’s increasingly trying to make that happen.

I’m sick of writing about this revolting human being, but I have to keep sounding the warning about him.

From Fringe Freakshow to Conservative Echo

For years, Fuentes was treated as a sideshow — banned from platforms, scorned by conservatives, dismissed as a crank. He was deplatformed from both YouTube and X (formerly Twitter).

But then Donald Trump came along, and saying the outrageous became okay. Fuentes paid attention.

As parts of the Republican base drift to the far right, his ideas are testing what remains of the party’s boundaries.
