New Netflix Film Showcases Black Voices In Hollywood
A new Netflix docu-series will give an insight into the increasing voice and influence of black filmmakers and actors in Hollywood.
The docu-series, titled “They’ve Gotta Have Us,” was acquired by Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY, a collective dedicated to showcasing the work of people of color and female directors.
DuVernay is the Oscar award-winning director of movies such as “Selma,” “When They See Us,” “They Will Follow,” and “A Wrinkle in Time.” DuVernay has also been tapped to direct Marvel’s “New Gods.”
“They’ve Gotta Have Us” is directed by UK-based Simon Frederick. The film features interviews with stars such as John Singleton, John Boyega, Harry Belafonte, Robert Townsend, David Oyelowo, Whoopi Goldberg and Laurence Fishburne.
During the film, interviewees comment on groundbreaking black films such as “Do The Right Thing,” “Boyz in the Hood,” “Hollywood Shuffle,” “Black Panther” and “Moonlight.”
“‘They’ve Gotta Have Us’ speaks directly to our highest ideas of inclusion, cultural context and community. Not only are we introducing an exciting artist like Simon Frederick to a new audience, but his project shares the stories of Black Cinema’s most influential filmmakers and actors,” said ARRAY President Tilane Jones.
“They’ve Gotta Have Us,” debuts on Netflix on Feb. 5.
