It’s The World Cup, Time for the Quadrennial Soccer-Bashing Piece

It happens like clockwork. Every four years, when there’s a World Cup, some right-wing troglodyte writes an article bashing soccer. In the past, it’s been wingnut Ann Coulter, the godmother of alt-right propaganda, and Glenn Beck, a man who proved too extreme for FOX News Channel (FNC.) Right-wing propagandists understand they have to keep their rapidly-aging viewers enraged, so they author these pieces raging against the rise of soccer.

Soccer Moms and Americana

These pieces often claim soccer isn’t American and not as manly as “American football.”( I guess getting brain damage and crippling injuries is manly.) Another endless complaint is soccer doesn’t have enough scoring. I’ve heard this one many times over the last 30 years and it’s lame and inaccurate.

Whether these white-wing trolls like it, soccer has penetrated the American consciousness. It’s part of the culture as much as over-the-top Halloween celebrations. Soccer is featured in movies, car commercials and is played at most high schools in America.
