‘Invincible’ Blows the Lid Off the Superhero Genre
Amazon superhero series tackles weighty issues
I finally got around to watching “Invincible” on Amazon Prime. The TV series is based on the Image comic and came out in 2021. The comic book was created by Robert Kirkman, who also created “The Walking Dead” comic, which also went on to be a groundbreaking TV show.
And with “Invincible,” Kirkman looks like he has another hit. The show takes place in a universe filled with superpowered beings. However, since this is the Image universe, and they don’t have the license rights from DC or Marvel, they use characters based on familiar heroes such as Batman and Superman. The Superman of the “Invincible” universe is Omni-Man. But he has similar abilities to DC’s Big Blue. There is also a global spy agency that works alongside superheroes in the vein of Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. and a superhero team that is known as the Guardians of the Globe, a replica of DC’s Justice league.
The show also discusses a familiar trope in the superhero genre and that is, how do you stop the most powerful being on the planet if he goes rogue?
