Game, Set, Boo: Tennis Fans Remind Trump He Can’t Silence America
‘Mad King Donnie’ Forgets First Amendment
“The Mad King,” aka President Donald Trump, does about four crazy things per day, but let’s focus on what he pulled off over the weekend. And I’m not talking about his threat to invade Chicago!
Trump made a disastrous appearance at the U.S. Open, but what’s interesting is that before this, the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) sent out a memo to broadcasters asking them not to cover any raucous behavior or boos. Is this normal?
Sucking Up to Dear Leader
Tennis reporter Ben Rothenberg was blunt about the USTA’s blatant sucking up to Trump.
“The USTA’s plan to show Trump during the anthem, one of the noisiest and bombastic portions of Sunday’s events, is already an effective way to insulate Trump from likely booing,” Rothenberg said in Bounces. “But the preemptive instructions outlined by the USTA in this email — asking broadcasters to censor and avoid any possible protest or negative crowd reaction to Trump for television audiences watching around the world — is further complicity in broadcasting Trump’s desired stagecraft for his first appearance at the U.S. Open in a decade.”
