Even Republicans Can’t Control ‘Monster Caucus’

Far-right Republicans halt House activities

The satirist P.J. O’Rourke once said Republicans claim government doesn’t work, then get elected and prove it. I would say that’s an accurate summation of what is happening in the U.S. House of Representatives right now.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is currently going through the embarrassing situation of trying to get elected speaker of the house. Unfortunately, he has failed nine times. (As I write this article, he may again try to go through this process.)

The odd thing about McCarthy’s situation is he’s facing opposition from his own party. McCarthy has failed to gain 218 votes which are necessary to secure the speaker’s position. But to gain the speaker’s post, McCarthy has to gain the support of 20 members of the Freedom Caucus, who I like to call the “Monster Caucus.”

Lack of Trust

According to several news reports, these legislators won’t support McCarthy for several reasons, although their true motives are not…
