For decades, Atlanta has been known as the mecca for Black Americans trying to make it in the music industry. However, it’s fast becoming known as a mecca for upcoming and aspiring actors, especially those of color. That’s what drew Dani Guevarez to the city as opposed to Los Angeles or New York. She’s originally from Florida but moved to Atlanta to pursue a career in dance, eventually catching the acting bug and deciding to pursue a career as an actress.

Guevarez said word is getting out about Atlanta’s flourishing television and film scene.

“A lot of people are coming here from LA,” she said.

The Tyler Perry Effect

One reason Atlanta has become an all-around entertainment hub is entertainment mogul Tyler Perry, who has a studio in Atlanta.

Guevarez says, “his [rags-to-riches] story inspires people” in the industry.

Guevarez’s hard work paid off because she recently won a role on the BET comedy “First Wives Club.” The show is a reimagining of the 1996 movie “The First Wives Club,” starring Goldie Hawn, about women struggling to deal with post-divorce life. BET’s version has an all-African-American cast and stars Jill Scott.
