African Nations Stage World Cup Thrillers
Brazilian flair finally breaches Swiss vault
In Monday’s World Cup games, the African nations seemed to remember how to play soccer.
Ghana, who progressed to the quarter-final stages in the 2010 World Cup, bounced back from their defeat to Portugal with a thrilling 3–2 win against South Korea. Much of Ghana’s improved performance goes down to the strong running of winger Andre Ayew, a veteran international, who created many chances on the flank.
Ghana Shows Grit
Ghana quickly was 2–0 up at the end of the first half from goals by Mohammed Salisu and Mohammed Kudus. But the South Koreans, roared on by their passionate fans, scored two goals from Cho Gue-Sung in the second half to claw it back to 2–2.
A late second goal from Kudus sealed the game for Ghana and the final score was 3–2. Ghana now sits second in Group H and a tie against Uruguay could qualify them for the second round. South Korea needs a win and luck to qualify for the elimination round.
